What is polyester thread and how does it differ from cotton cord?

Polyester thread and cord (полиестерни шнурове — poliesterni shnurove) is cord made from synthetic polyester fibres — the most widely available synthetic cord alternative to natural cotton cord. Polyester cord has several distinctive properties compared to cotton: it is smoother on the surface (polyester fibres are finer and more uniform than cotton fibres, producing a cleaner cord surface); more colour-stable (polyester dyes are more resistant to fading from UV light and washing than cotton dyes, making polyester cord more durable in long-term wear and outdoor use); more moisture-resistant (polyester does not absorb water as readily as cotton, so polyester cord bracelets and necklaces are less affected by rain, sweat, and washing); and slightly stiffer and more uniform in diameter (polyester's synthetic construction gives it consistent cross-section dimensions that natural cotton can vary slightly). The tradeoff is that polyester cord has a slightly more synthetic, less organic feel than cotton — it lacks the warm, natural-material tactile quality of cotton, and its surface is slightly more slippery, which can make knotting less grippy than with cotton (particularly important in macramé where knot tension is a key factor). Available in multiple diameters from fine (0.5mm) to cord-weight (2mm and above), and in a wide colour range with vibrant, colour-fast synthetic dyes.

When should I choose polyester cord over cotton cord?

Polyester cord is the better choice when durability, colour stability, and moisture resistance are priorities — particularly for jewellery intended for everyday wear, beach and outdoor use, or designs where colour vibrancy needs to be maintained over a long period. For friendship bracelets and cord jewellery worn daily, polyester cord's resistance to fading and moisture makes it more practical than cotton for long-term wear. For children's jewellery that will be worn through active play, washing, and outdoor use, polyester's resilience is an advantage. For vivid colour designs where the brightness and uniformity of colour is important to the finished aesthetic, polyester's colour-stable synthetic dyes produce a more consistent result. For designs where the natural, organic aesthetic of cotton is the priority — boho jewellery, natural material combinations, earthy texture — cotton cord remains the preferred choice. Bijuland ships from Plovdiv, Bulgaria and supplies jewellery makers, macramé artists, craft studios, and cord supply resellers across Bulgaria and Europe.
