What clasp types are available and how do they differ?
Clasps (закопчалки — zakopchalki) are the metal findings that open and close to allow a necklace or bracelet to be put on and taken off. The main types available at Bijuland are: lobster clasp (омарова закопчалка — omarova zakopchalka) — the most widely used clasp in contemporary jewellery, a spring-loaded claw mechanism that opens when a small lever is pressed and closes automatically when released; it clips onto a jump ring, chain link, or end loop; reliable, compact, and available in a wide size range from small (10mm) for delicate necklaces to large (20mm+) for heavier pieces. Toggle clasp (закопчалка тогъл — zakopchalka togal) — a two-part clasp consisting of a T-shaped bar and a large open ring; the bar passes through the ring at an angle and settles horizontally to lock; decorative as well as functional, and visible on the finished piece as a design element — suited to bracelets and necklaces where the clasp is meant to be seen. Magnetic clasp (магнитна закопчалка — magnitna zakopchalka) — two magnetic halves that attract and snap together, requiring no manual latch operation; easy to use with limited hand dexterity; less secure than mechanical clasps for heavier pieces or active wear. Spring ring clasp (пружинна закопчалка — pruzhinna zakopchalka) — a small circular clasp with a spring-loaded lever; lighter and more delicate than a lobster clasp; suited to fine chain and lightweight necklaces. Box clasp (кутиеста закопчалка — kutiyesta zakopchalka) — a tab that clicks into a box housing; secure and flat; commonly used in multi-strand and pearl necklaces where a flat, neat closure is preferred. Barrel or torpedo clasp (цилиндрична закопчалка — tsilindrichna zakopchalka) — two threaded halves that screw together; secure and invisible when closed; used in heavier cord and leather necklaces. All types available in gold-plated (позлатена), silver-plated (посребрена), antique gold, and antique silver.
How do I choose the right clasp?
Clasp selection depends on the weight of the piece, the wearer's dexterity, and the desired aesthetic. For most necklaces and bracelets, a lobster clasp is the practical default — reliable, widely available, and familiar to wearers. For bracelets worn alone, a toggle or magnetic clasp is easier to fasten one-handed than a lobster clasp. For pearl and multi-strand necklaces, a box clasp provides the flat, neat closure these designs require. For cord and leather necklaces, a barrel/torpedo clasp or a cord end with lobster clasp combination is the standard approach. The clasp should be attached to the strand ends via jump rings or cord end tips — for finishing raw cord ends, see Cord End Tips.
